Historic Auburn’s Old Town Streetscape

Brick Sidewalk Details and Low-Impact Development Planter Design Compliment Design in Historic City

Bennett Engineering Services worked with the landscape architect to design a streetscape corridor connecting the City of Auburn’s historic Old Town with its downtown business district. The team garnered input from business leaders and community stakeholders during three Community Advisory Committee meetings.

The engineering project manager coordinated with Caltrans for the relinquishment of Highway 49 through the city limits. The team also performed a civil engineering review of the master plan to ensure safe vehicle passage and street functionality.

In addition, the team provided a phasing plan, cost estimate, utility relocations and developed the construction documents. The design included demolition plans, layout plans, grading, utility plans including a water pipeline replacement for PCWA, drainage plans. Furthermore, the engineer provided construction details for curb and gutter, sidewalks, vehicular islands, and asphalt concrete work. In many areas, the team overcame challenges where the right-of-way was limited and issues relating to parking, business visibility, and pedestrian access were prevalent.

“The work Leo Rubio did for us with the Caltrans Relinquishment project was stellar.  He really did one-of-a-kind work.  We were able to build Streetscape Phase 1 because he got it moved right through the Commission.  The whole process was done in 18 months.  It was amazing.”
