Creating an Active Transportation Link between Contra Costa and Marin Counties
This project reduced peak hour traffic congestion and increased safe access for pedestrians and cyclists on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge by converting the shoulder on the upper deck (westbound) to a six-mile protected bicycle/pedestrian path. This path provides an important active transportation link between Contra Costa and Marin Counties. The project also converted the shoulder on the lower deck (eastbound) of the Bridge to a peak-hour travel lane, and provided improvements at various I-580 eastbound off-ramp intersections east of the Bridge.
BENEN provided plans, specifications, and cost estimates for traffic signals, lane-control signals, bridge and freeway lighting, ramp metering, traffic monitoring stations, camera systems, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, and a fiber optic cable system.
